Millvale Children's Library

Community Issue

The issue that we are presenting is that Millvale has never had a library, and building one has long been supported by residents of all ages. Some people think negatively of Millvale but we think otherwise. It has a small town feel and people just need a place to come together. A library provides that. We will work with our classmates and neighbors to build the children's portion of the new library. This is such a popular idea because a library will provide a safe and productive recreational activity to the youth of the community, along with giving many people access to knowledge, technology, and information. A library will also give children in the area after-school and summer activities to keep them having fun while doing something beneficial. There is evidence to back these educational needs up: 73% of Millvale’s population has a high school diploma and 8% has a Bachelor’s Degree. In Allegheny County 86% of people graduated high school and 28% have their Bachelor’s Degree.

Social Impact

Our project's social impact will be -and already has been- tremendous. From 2008-09 resident-volunteers served over 500 kids and operated a successful children's library. They purchased a building to house the new library. When completed there will be better education and literacy in local youth, plus an instilled desire to read at an earlier age. The process of establishing the library has shown a huge sense of community. The step that we, as youth involved in the project, would like to focus on now is the children’s section. In order to further involve other teenagers and youth, we are planning a day where we and our fellow classmates give back. There will be a full day of service with two or three Shaler Area High school clubs, which include the Key Club and peers who are musicians and artists. Several youth will work with an electrician to install electrical wiring. 20 students will volunteer for 3 hours each. We will install and prepare all the drywall in the children’s section.

Plan for Change

Our plan for change is not only to help build a functional children's library in our community, but to bring as many people as we can together to help out, including other teens. The library will provide a productive way to spend time when it is finished, but it also provides an awesome way to bring youth together and do something fun and productive in the process of establishing it. To do so, there is an event planned for May 5th, involving artists and musicians at Shaler Area High School. Each year, there is an art show planned in the school’s courtyard, at which a few of the Shaler bands play an acoustic set. The problem is that this can only happen during school hours, so only other students can see the art and appreciate the music. This year, however, the event is planned to take place at Millvale Library. This will raise awareness of the library in people throughout the Shaler School District and help needed in further establishing it, and hopefully get even more youth involved.

Innovation

Our project is extremely innovative in many ways. First off, it has been established entirely by volunteers, people who are certified in certain related fields, helping not for pay but because they want to see Millvale get its own library. Certified electricians and carpenters will help us build. The collaboration between so many different groups of people in the church, business, student and residential communitities has been outstanding. Another innovative aspect of our project that excites me is the artistic side of it. For instance, the children’s section will have stained glass windows designed, created, and installed - all donated! - by Kelly Art Glass –a Millvale company- in each of the three window seats. Bringing local teens together for an art show and acoustic concert will also bring some culture and art into the project. As part of our project another famous local artist, sculptor James Simon, will install a kid-friendly sculpture of a dog holding books on its head.

Sustainability

Our idea can most certainly live on, for it is a substantial and very influential project. Even through what has been done so far, a legacy has been formed in the Millvale community when people all unite to help with a common purpose and goal. In another way, our project can also live on as part of an established center. In addition to the library, there will be onsite residential and commercial rental space whose income offsets costs of operating the library. Eventually, the library will also receive county and state funding to live on in the future. As an integral part of the library, our project will live on. Other communities may be interested in using this idea to help operate their libraries, especially when so many are considering closing because they don't have enough tax money. We will use the $15,000 to purchase construction materials (drywall, wood, electrical supplies), the James Simon sculpture of a dog balancing books on its head, and 2 new computers for the kids to use.

Hello All, I just learned of this project through my church at Christ Lutheran in Millvale. I think that this project will have a very positive impact on the community. Those of you supporting this initiative should be commended. The Shaler Area High School students involved in this project are going to learn alot about how a project developes and moves through a "process". You have my vote of support and I will be forwarding this message throughout my distribution list. Good Luck!

What a wonderful project from this young lady, Taylor, and this young man, CJ! It will help us keep up the great momentum in Millvale! All of this week, a group of Alternative Spring Breakers from the University of Vermont are staying in Millvale to work on the library. Here is a brief article: http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10063/1040026-54.stm Its just another display of the selflessness being shown by young people to help the Millvale community. Your support is very much appreciated!

With so many job applications and government forms only being available on the web, access to the internet is a necessity, not a luxury. Half the people in the United States still do not have computers in their homes. Public libraries are the only place to go to use a computer if you don't own one. Millvale library will be a vital part of the community for that reason. (And so many others!) GO MILLVALE LIBRARY!

Reading is fundamental!!!
Posted on February 26, 2010
A community library is an essential element of any community. It brings people together to provide access to all community members, regardless of status or income, to books (which represent knowledge, adventure, and otherwise healthy recreation). Anything that can be done to encourage children to read and provide them with a variety of reading material from which they can choose, can only be a good thing. Best of luck.

This is will also be great for the adults in the community as they would have a place to come together as well as to utilize the resources that a library has to offer.

I worked on a neighborhood plan with Millvale maybe 10 years ago, and at that time a library was on the short list of projects to work on. It is so encouraging to see it become a reality. But maybe better than a library is that the next generation of community leaders is growing!

I remember as a child in Millvale how much I would like to have had books to read. The only library was at my Catholic school and that was limited. I never understood why every town didn't have a library; kids from other parts of Pittsburgh did, why not us. So now if there is a chance to bring one to Millvale, a child of 65 years ago votes to give this choice to Millvale children today.

I think this library will make a great impact on our community, I would say that everybody who likes to read should get out and support this library and the wonderful things that they will be offering to benefit the community. I also think that C.J and Tylor are doing an excellant job for their senior project. I hope they finish what they started because alot of people are counting on them. especially the children of Millvale.

This is a great idea. In my opinion, every town needs a library. Libraries encourage reading, which is never a bad thing. These volunteers are doing a great job and are getting involved in their community. Please support this great idea. I know that I would miss my town's library. I have spent a lot of time there and it is like a place to get away. These volunteers really need all the materials they can get. Good luck to Millvale as they take on this great project. I hope that it works out! Bye!

I think that a library is very important, so I understand how Millvale should have a library. I love how this project is going on, and I know it will help a lot of people. Students will have access to books to help them learn, and beginner readers will be able to have an early start in reading. Reading is very educational and books should always be available to all students and adults. I know that this library will change lives! Thanks to all the people who voted for Millvale! Good luck!!!! :-)

I think that this library project is a VERY good idea. By getting this grant, the library will be able to be built and provide a better education and learning environment for MANY students. I understnd how much of need a library is in a town. You don't want to go out and buy every book that you want to read, do you? Also, a library will provide Millvale's students, children, and adults a quiet place to read, look up information, or do homework. I hope that Millvale can be a better place.GoodLuck

This is a very worthwhile project and seems well thought out. The most innovative aspect of it, it seems to me, is the volunteer work offered by a variety of contributors of all ages. I don't think I've ever heard of a library being built by contributions--this is a true community project.

After seeing the flood devastation that Millvale endured it is a testament to the community that they not only rebuilt what was lost but moved forward to make it better for generations to come. It is tremendous to see the youth of the area taking such an active role and knowing of the countless hours and dedication that they have already spent I can't imagine any project more deserving of such a grant to see their dreams through.

Millvale needs such a library now more than ever. Hopefully, this will be a source of many activities for the children as well as for the adults of the community. The people of Millvale have a reputation for coming together and helping one another; this project can materialize with the continued help and support of our residents and their reaching out to one another. I congratulate all the young people and the companies who are donating their services to help complete this Millvae "dream."

As a person who loves to read I can think of no greater gift to a community than a library.A place of refuge from the outside world, a place of knowledge and yes a place of adventure.Nothing expands a young or for that matter older person's mind than a good book.A good book can take you to exciting never visited places, a good book can introduce you to such a wide spectrum of characters ,ignite your imagination, challenge comprehension skills and perhaps even give one a glimpse of perfection.
