Community Issue
The community issue this project will address is violence in the student's community and school. The students have expressed a concern about feeling safe at home, on their way to and from school, and even while they are in school. Being able to provide an anonymous way students and community members could "Speak Up" against violence would give them power over the unfortunate events that happen in their area every day. Violence is a prominent community issue because recent crime statistics show that crime has risen in Pittsburgh's Northside neighborhood, where Oliver High School is situated. Many of the students participating in the Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy have witnessed violence firsthand, or known someone who has died from unnecessary gun violence. This is a prominent and important issue to the students of Oliver High School, and the Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy would like your help in doing something to prevent it.
Social Impact
As a result of the project, "Speak Up Oliver High School," we would like to eventually see students and community members taking action to prevent violence in their community. We will with PAX/Real Solutions to Gun Violence, a non-profit organization working with all Americans to help bring an end to gun violence against children and families. This organization offers a text messaging system that can be set up for Oliver High School. The organization would provide a unique text code where students and community members could anonymously send a text if they see a gun in school. The code would then trigger a call to the local police department, who would take action against the threat. This would have a immediate and direct positive impact on the community, empowering students and community members with a tool to keep themselves and those around them safe. We will be able to evaluate the success by noting how many times the program is used and students reaction.
Plan for Change
Our plan for change is to set up a text messaging system with PAX/Real Solutions for Gun Violence so people at Oliver High School and the surrounding community can have an easy way to report a gun. The biggest obstacle we have faced in this attempt so far is the lack of funding. If we were to secure funding for this project, the next step would be to set up the program with PAX/Real Solutions for Gun Violence. The students at Oliver's Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy already worked with PAX on a much smaller scale, promoting the organizations 1-866-SPEAKUP number. Similar to the text plan, people can anonymously call this number and report a gun or violence. The text plan is the next step in this initiative, and the students are hopeful that they will be able to provide the service to their peers. We would advertise the text code and let students know it is anonymous and tips off local police with only a few click of their cell phone. We will empower the community against violence.
Innovation
This project is innovative and different because it empowers people to take action against violence. If Oliver's Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy secures the funding to set up and promote this project, the students will use their talents and imagination to get this message out to the community. This is the first step for community members to take back control of their community that has been increasingly riddled by violence. Hopefully the availability of this anonymous text code will give people hope that they will be protected against gun violence in their community, and inspire them to take further control over their surroundings. The Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy students have expressed interest in getting the word on in unique ways, like making posters, having skits during lunchtime, and handing out awareness items from PAX/Real Solutions for Gun Violence.
Sustainability
If Oliver's Pittsburgh Young Leaders Academy was chosen as the winner, we would use the $15,000 to successfully plan, implement, and advertise the Speak Up campaign at Oliver High School and the surrounding community. We would take the necessary steps to set up the text code and alert the local police station. We would also use the money to advertise the code to the community so everyone is aware of their power to affect their surroundings. Many people feel hopeless and powerless in a situation where violence is so prominent, and the Speak Up Oliver High School project would empower the community to take back control of their surroundings. This is the type of project that could be replicated in other schools and communities, and has been effectively implemented in many communities already thanks for PAX/Real Solutions for Gun Violence.

What a great program to have here T Oliver high school. We lose so many of our students to violence
This project is an exemplary activity. The future is in the hands of our youth, and this project clearly indicates that Oliver's youth are learning what citizenship, responsibility and accountablity mean.
Oliver(PYLA) is making a great impact!
I feel this project should win. Programs like this are desperately needed. Best of Luck.
please vote for this, we need help both in school and community to curb violence
We need Programs like this at Oliver to help our students in the community to live in a safe environment. Please support this program
Wonderful idea!
I think this is a great idea to get the word out. Why not use something that the kids are familiar with using, as well as many others. Great job!
I'm so proud and privileged to know the students at Oliver High. They are diligent young leaders who are striving to make a positive impact in the community. They can't do everything, but they are doing something which says alot for their character!
A very clever and resourceful use to of social networking and communication to enable students to positive active participants in their daily environment. It's a wonderful way to empower students to promote a safe environment. kk
GREAT JoB! You go Oliver High!!
Fantastic Plan
I AM SURE OLIVER HIGH SCHOOL WILL GET THE GRANT, DO NOT LOSE FAITH, BE PATIENT AND SOON YOU WILL HAVE IT. GO FOR IT BRITNEY
Our schools need to be safe and this is a great way to make this happen. Kudos to the youth for being passionate about this idea and I hope it is able to come to life!
This is a great idea and will likely help to inform authorities of a situation BEFORE violence occurs. Perhaps even more importantly, it will give people a way that they can come forward (anonomously) to help to curb violence in their communities. Let's hope that this will be just the beginning of empowering each of us to play a role in our safety.
Good luck!
I'd like to reply to a comment from Feb. 23 about not encourgaing kids to text in school. I am not sure the commenter has properly read and understood this entry. I would encorage any student in school to use any means at their disposal to alert authoriites to a potential dangerous situation. If a text can save a life, eliminate a violent situation, or improve the community; then by all means text away. I commend the students of Oliver H.S. for applying technology to comvate this issue.
Vote for Oliver
I love this project idea! I think it will be a wonderful change for the Pittsburgh Public School! If you win, you will hopefully be able to implement this texting hotline throughout 16 of the Pittsburgh Public Schools!
This is a thoughtful way to empower community to work together in order to become safe neighborhoods again. Thank you, Young Leaders
Good Job Oliver!!
I am proud of the PYLA students and staff at Oliver and believe this project is a step in the right direction to securing safe schools and communities where residents and students can thrive by taking ownership in their community.
I think this project has a lot of potential to do something extraordinary in the Oliver community. I strongly feel that these youth have the power and the passion to bring a positive and lasting impact on the residents within their neighborhood. Great job everyone! No matter what the outcome of this contest, do not quit on your dreams and desires!
I think this is a wonderful idea, especially with the acts of violence going on in Pittsburgh. This project also brings a positive spin to an area with a negative reputation.
Go Oliver!!
great job, you have my support!
I really think it's a great idea. Anything that can be done to stop violence in our Oliver community would be worthwhile. I'm proud of all of you for being apart of an initiative that goes beyond you the individual. Keep up the good work!!!! I agree with Mrs. Fillmore, Raven, you are and will always be a WINNER!
Great essay, a serious issue that needs attention.
A great essay, well written, great ideas.
i don't think children should be encouraged to text message at school
Great idea!
How cool would it be if the kids showcased this project at the 9th Grade Nation Civics Summit! This project could inspire kids from across the Pittsburgh region to put an end to violence. This coupled with Carrick PYLA's Silent Witness Social Awareness art installation project would be great!
Hi Raven! I am very proud to see that you are working so hard! I hope that you and your group do well! Keep up the good work! Way to represent Oliver! Ms. Fillmore
Congrats! I'm so proud of the Oliver PYLA team for making it this far in the selection process! I know the kids are going to be so pumped up when they hear the news!
A neat way to possibly bring attention to this project...Students can cut out silhouettes of people on plywood, cardboard, or foamboard, and make them so they could stand. The silhouettes will be in memory of someone they lost to violence. The silhouettes could be painted with plain clothing not representing a certain neighborhood with social awareness messages on the t-shirts or chest of the silhouettes. The social awareness messages can give information about the Speak Up project.
I like this project, and I would like to see this coupled with the "bad behavior" project for the same school. The idea of both of these projects is to have students understand their culture of behavior (small bad behavior and big bad behavior, like guns) and to change their behavior and the culture such that bad behavior (small and big) are "not cool". Might be more powerful to highlight (text messages ) instances of Positive Behavior: times where students successfully resolve conflicts.
Brittany, I like your idea a great deal, the idea of giving students a safe way to share information is a very important and practical issue, Best of luck to you and your proposal. kk
